*LATEST NEWS*
The last couple of weeks has seen a number of changes at AMP and it's a pleasure to bring you the lastest news so here goes: We brought you the news of guitarist Esteen Jacobsz taking on a solo career, well the news on that is that AMP sat in on a rehearsal a couple of days ago to see what he's been up to and things are looking pretty exciting. Jacobsz and drummer Warrick Poltney have formed a band together called The Sick-Leaves and will make a whole bunch of rock bands look like absolute beginners to put it quite frankly. Influence by many bands alike, The Sick-Leaves can be classified as Brit Rock with a touch of Jimi Hendrix and the Velvet Underground...Yes we are going way back but they rock and most definately a band to look out for. The band will start gigging extensively in the next couple of weeks and are also set to record a 7 track EP with producer Wynand van der Walt towards the end of October. The band is in search of a bassist with similar influences. For more information, please contact Sam Alberts on +27 83 471 7819 or email at sam@amp.co.za
AMP has also been consulting with a number of music loving people and has decided to make a couple of changes to the website pertaining to music in South Africa and around the world and trends that are currently happening in music worldwide. We are also in the process of setting up the AMP Top 30 Chart...Yes we know, another one but it will be different as it will be open to all genres of music both nationally and internationally and will not just be dated to what we hear on radio now but songs from all eras. Watch this space for updates.

LOCAL NEWS
AMP Artist Laurie Levine finished in the studio on Friday. Four tracks were recorded and the first single "Morning Sky" will be submitted to radio on Tuesday. Laurie and producer Neill Solomon was rather surprised on Thursday when top SA artist, Ed Jordan walked into the studio, absolutely loved the tracks and offered to do backing vocals on "The One". Ed did magic in the recording booth and everyone left the studio smiling.
AMP Artist Stefan Dixon is currently in the Mother City of Cape Town for a well deserved holiday. Check out the AMP gig guide for his up & coming gigs in Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas. Stefan is also in the process of getting a band together. Bassists, drummers and lead guitarists will be auditioned as of the 26th of July. 5 July 2004
So the updates has been a bit rare on the AMP site lately due to a number of factors...tore legaments to the webmasters' knee and the spell of flu that has been going around. Full recovery is not there just yet but we are all back to work and have loads of news so here goes:
LOCAL NEWS
The last couple of weeks saw may performances by the AMP artists. Fly Paper Jet left for Grahamstown yesterday to finish the last leg of the national tour. Their shows up in Jozi went extremely well but it was the gig at Die Mystic Boer with AMP artist Laurie Levine that is according to the AMP team, the one to remember. The 180 strong crowd supported the two up and coming bands like they were old favorites and everyone had a great time. AMP would like to thank Eloise Hyland for the brilliant accomodation at their guesthouse - Hillhouse and Die Mystic Boer for keeping their promise to do the advertising and for an excellent time. Check out the venue rating below to find out if a trip down to Bloemfontein is worth your while.
RADIO SUBMISSIONS
Some news from our recording artists... AMP has recently submitted Fly Paper Jets' single "The Light Fantastic" to radio stations around the country. To get the song to Number 1 on every station, we will be needing your help. Phone or email the station of you chose and request the single.
Laurie Levine is almost done in the studio and the first single will be submitted later this week. Watch this space for updates.
It has been confirmed that Karma and her band will be playing at the Seattle Music Fest at Alki Beach on the weekend of the 14th of August. The exact date of the performance is yet to reach the AMP offices. This has a slight implication on the bands scheduled tour to South Africa but AMP is working around the clock to reschedule and confirm all dates.
**VENUE OF THE WEEK**
The trip to Bloemfontein was most definately worth the 4 hour drive. The bands arived at Die Mystic Boer at about 3pm to find the engineer waiting and the pa already set up and ready to blast music. A lot of work has gone into Die Mystic... Artists who have performed there will be glad to know that the stage is not as dodgy as it was a couple of months ago - it's actually very sturdy and the fear of being hit in the face by a mic has been taken out of the picture. The lighting is great, the sound is great, the pizza was fantastic and the management ensured that a great time was had by all there. Bloem is definately one of the most under-rated places in South Africa.

Laurie Levine and her band performed at Kippies Jazz International on Friday night and ensured a good time for everyone in the audience. Half way through her set, owner of Kippies and South African jazz ledgend, Sipho "Hotstix" Mbuso joined Levine and her band on stage, playing the sax on her song "Talk to Me". "It's one of my favorite songs and I just felt like jamming along to it", Hotsix said after the show. Cape Town based band Fly Paper Jet had their first gigs in Jo'burg last week. They kicked their tour off with a performance at Back2Basix in Westdene and followed it up with an excellent performance at Nile Crocodile in Pretoria. The well known hostile crowd of the Nile very quickly warmed up to the Capetonians and ensured everyone to have a brilliant time. Their gig at Rascasse unfortunately had to be cancelled due to a voiceless, flu infected leadsinger. They were however ready to jam on Saturday afternoon at an instore gig at Compact Disc Warehouse in Rosebank and later that evening at Cafe Barcelona in Pretoria. FPJ will be in Jozi untill the 3rd of July - be sure not to miss their upcoming gigs.

Julian Sun and Douglas Bean will be performing at Rascasse this Friday. Both have been performing with numerous bands including Henry Ate and Tamara Day but is taking the roles of lead singers more seriously nowadays. Be sure not to miss this performance. Music starts at 8pm and the cover is R20. If after their show, you are still in the mood for great music (and we can guarentee that you will be after seeing them), you can hop next door to Roxy's to check out Arno Carstens' New Porn.
Cape Town based band FLY PAPER JET will be ariving in Jozi over the weekend and will start their conquering of Gauteng on Tuesday 15 June. Be sure not to miss out on any of their performances. Their debut album "Fly Paper Jet Live" is also available on the AMP SHOP.
Kay Oliver performed at Kippies in Newtown last week and blew the crowd away. His mixture of rock and folk with great sing along melody lines soon had the people on their feet and cheering for more. Cant wait to see him with a full band behind him. Most definately a performer to watch out for. Kay is in search of a drummer and bassist with rock influences. For more info contact Sam on 083 471 7819. His next gig will be at Rascasse (next to Roxy's in Melville) on Monday 28 June.
NEWS FROM THE STATES
Karma and her band performed at Disney World this weekend and blew the 2000 strong crowd away. CD's were sold out in a matter of minutes and signing autographs took about 2 and a half hours. For those you had bad luck in not being able to get a copy of their music, all Karma and Henry Ate albums and merchandise are available on the AMP SHOP for your convenience. Karma will be back in South Africa in August for a very brief tour. The first show is set to happen at Back2Basix on 4 August as a warm-up for Oppikoppi. Bookings are essential for this performance and AMP would advise you to call the venue asap to reserve your seat. (Back2Basix - 011 726 6857)
**NEW VENUE**
88 in Norwood is not exactly a new spot to check out but but they do have a new way of doing things. After being in the bussiness for a couple of years, owners Josh and Allen (owned 206 back in the day and gave Henry Ate one of their first gigs) have decided to have live bands at the bar on Sunday nights - and not only high profile bands which is great news to AMP. This past Sunday saw MXO getting the crowd on their feet. The vide is great and apart from the venue being a sound engineers nightmare (but that is nothing for you to worry about), 88 is most definately a spot to check out. AMP artist Laurie Levine will be gigging there on Sunday 13 June.

**NEW VENUE**
Okay so this update might be a bit late but it's worth sharing the news anyway...There is a new venue in Jo'burg and it rocks. Back2Basix opened a while ago but it was only on Tuesday last week that AMP decided to check it out. The band: DNA Strings. The atmosphere: Abosolutely brilliant and some good to know facts: It's a full on music venue with great service...something, that with the departure of the Bassline was very much in need in Jozi.
The band enjoyed themselves very much and the people in the crowd were soon dancing on the tables and the venue owners...well they stood around with huge smiles on their faces, knowing that they must have done something right. VENUE RATING (out of 5):*****

AMP artist Stefan Dixon performed last night at Tings an Times in Hatfield, Pretoria, along with Cape Town based band Delta Blue. The venue was packed well before the gig began - an indication of the anticipation of the great music to come, and the crowd were not left disappointed. Stefan took the stage and had the audience on the edge of their seats (the few that were sitting!) for his entire set. Then it was Delta Blue's turn to rock the venue... I'm sure the tremors were felt in Cape Town as they romped, with an awesome stage-presence, through a two-part set consisting mostly of their own material as well as some great covers of Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and others.
Stefan Dixon will be performing with Delta Blue on the following dates:
Friday 30 April - Tanz Cafe, Rivonia
Saturday 8 May - Cool Runnings Centurion

**AN UPDATE ON THE WEEK**
A week of musical research at Splashy Fen resulted in three broken ribs and a funny coloured shoulder for the webmaster... no questions were asked and it turned out to be quite the eventfull weekend. After being towed into the festival grounds at Splashy, hotwiring the combi and using a screwdriver as a key for the petrol tank, Laurie Levine and her band finally got to the stage and performed a brilliant gig. She was invited to perform on the main stage the following night but had to leave for Oppikoppi in a car that had the resemblance of a Jo'burg taxi. At the same time, Stefan Dixon was entertaining the crowd at Oppikoppi with an excellent set of tunes along side guitarist Julian Sun and took the iniciative to extend his set by a further 30 minutes... In his words, "I just couldn't get off stage, I had so much fun. Die crowd was...." Well we'll just leave it there. Ariving at the farm in Northam (that's now after the R300 fine in Rustenburg) Laurie and her band got onto stage (after meeting up with a very excited Stefan) and performed a brilliant Sunday afternoon layed back gig.
The weekend came to an end with BOO! performing an excellent gig at the Koppi and many great memories made... Oppikoppi and Splashy Fen... Until next year.
